
One pretty day we walked to Duni, the highest point on Iona. Iona has a very different sense of land rights than the US. There were many fences on Iona, but the were for the animals--not people. Most fences had gates or stiles so that anyone could walk through them. It was no different than crossing a street. Every day, strangers were walking through pastures and other fenced areas. Iona also has communal pastures in which all the farmers share grazing time for their sheep.
Below, Charlie is reflecting the shape of the megalith on top of Duni. No one knows if it is really a prehistoric building or if it was created from early pilgrims each dropping a stone when they arrived. Either way, it's been there a mighty long time:
